Description
Keep students doing real math right before Thanksgiving break with Let’s Host Thanksgiving!, a one-day mini math project where students plan Thanksgiving dinner for a family without going over budget. Each pair pulls a Guest Card with a family, a guest count, a budget and a dinner time, then plans the whole feast. There’s more than one right answer, so students have to make decisions, adjust their plans and explain their thinking.
What Students Do:
- Use unit rates to find food costs and how many pans and pies they need
- Plan a turkey, 3 sides and a dessert, then fix their menu if it goes over budget
- Write and solve a two-step equation to decide whether to cook or cater
- Work backward with elapsed time to find when the turkey goes in the oven
