Description

Make your intro to the Pythagorean Theorem more meaningful with this Pythagorean Theorem discovery activity! Students match squares to the sides of four triangles, count the area of each square, and discover the relationship behind a² + b² = c² instead of simply memorizing a formula. With a 45-minute lesson and a 10-minute collaborative option, you can choose what works best for your classroom.

What Students Do:

  • Cut out squares and find the 3 that fit each triangle’s sides exactly
  • Count the area of each square and look for a pattern
  • Compare right and non-right triangles to see that the two smaller squares add up to the biggest one only when there’s a right angle
  • Connect their discovery to a² + b² = c², learn the words legs and hypotenuse, and use the converse to test whether a triangle is a right triangle

What’s Inside:

  • 45-minute hands-on discovery lesson
  • 10-minute collaborative version with reusable, laminate-ready square sets
  • Square cut-outs and a triangle mat
  • Student recording sheets and a class data table
  • Guided “Connect It!” example with a teacher guide
  • Notice & Wonder discussion prompts
  • Exit tickets, including a converse of the Pythagorean Theorem question
  • Answer keys
  • Teacher notes, lesson plans, I can statements and standards

Skills Covered:

  • Area of a square
  • Squares and square roots
  • Legs and hypotenuse
  • The Pythagorean Theorem and its converse

Fits in one class period, or use the 10-minute version when you’re short on time. Aligned to VA SOL 8.MG.4, CCSS 8.G.B.6 and 8.G.B.7, and TEKS 8.6(C) and 8.7(C).
